Howe quoted on front page of NY Times
As a definer of our generation. This article basically goes AGAINST everything we’ve learned in this class. I was so angry while reading it! In relation to our generation’s response to Bin Laden’s death, Howe says,
“Evil is evil, good is good. There are no antiheroes, there is no gray area. This is a Harry Potter vignette, and Voldemort is dead.”
He and I need to have a chat.

Twilight
As a fan of the Twilight series, I found it especially interesting to look at the greater implications of Meyer’s work this week. I know that Bella’s actions aren’t exactly self-empowering. When reading the series, I allowed myself to read without a critical eye. I accepted the logic, causes, and consequences of the narrative. The fact that the book encourages the fact that...

Love, Morality, and Politics
While watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this week, I couldn’t help notice that more often than not, Harry and Dumbledore’s second biggest enemy was themselves. Harry says that “working hard is important, but there’s something else that is even more important: believing in yourself.” I won’t say that that’s not true, but there comes a point...

Gilmore Girls and feminism
I really enjoyed reading “Riding the Third Wave: The Multiple Feminisms of Gilmore Girls” by Francesca Gamber. Although I didn’t follow the show religiously, I did tend to watch reruns after school. I always enjoyed the show, but I never looked at it critically. This essay provided an incredibly interesting, and for me, innovative approach to Gilmore Girls.I feel like this essay allowed me to have...

Week 1 Response
The pilot for Veronica Mars featured a large, diverse set of characters. Differences in race, class, and economic privilege were present between the characters. In Freaks in Geeks the characters were much more homogeneous in regards to the previously mentioned social constructions. The diversity in those characters can be found in their outlooks and actions in facing the challenges...
